The police received a call that the arsenal, weighing some 500
kilos, was deposited in front of a family home in the street.
It was then established that the ammunition had been left there
by disappointed scrap metal dealers, who had bought it from the
owner of the house, but were unable to resell it.
Police officers also learned that the shells and cartridges —
believed mostly to be live explosives — had been found in a nearby
forest, where they had been buried since WWII.
The police have given the ammunition over to the military for to
