Four years ago in Athens, Hungarian athletes garnered eight gold
medals, six silver and three bronze medals.
Hungarian elite sport has been on a downward course since the
1992 Barcelona Olympic Games. Since then, the number of Olympic
medals won by Hungarians has declined by 24 percent, he said.
Since the 2004 Athens Olympics, the number of registered
Hungarian athletes has declined by one third. To date, 142
Hungarians have qualified for the Beijing Olympics, and their number
will not exceed 170 in any case. In Athens, Hungary was represented
by more than 200 athletes.
Hungarians competing in Beijing are expected to collect 130
points, enabling Hungary to finish among the top 20 countries in the
unofficial Olympic points competition, he said.
