The room of maneouvering in fiscal policy looks tight. The new government and its programme is to be adopted by Parliament on May 29. By then, prime minister-designate Viktor Orbán needs to decide on the direction of economic policies to be pursued in forthcoming years. Fidesz communication in recent weeks gave relatively little solid ground to predict what policies the incoming government considers crucial, but some assumptions can be formulated.

Thousands evacuated as floods follow high winds and record rainfall. Budapest was drenched by heavy rains and buffeted by winds gusting at over 100 kilometres per hour early last week. A motorist was lucky to escape injury when a 15-metre tree fell onto his car as he was turning in a side street near Moszkva tér in Buda. A number of roads were closed for several hours due to fallen trees and power lines, some rooves lost tiles and an unoccupied residential building collapsed in District XXII when the earth subsided beneath it. However, the damage and inconvenience caused in the capital was dwarfed by the disaster that befell many places in rural Hungary during four days of torrential rains that began over the weekend and only abated last Wednesday.
