It seems it's not such a good idea to play your B-team after winning the group. Three quarter-finals, three group winners, that have done exactly that, make exits.

Sebastian Schweinsteiger scored and had two assists as Germany defeated Portugal 3-2 in the first quarter-final of Euro 2008. Similarly to their defeat at the bronze medal game of the 2006 World Cup the entire Portuguese team played unmotivated with Christiano Ronaldo being the shadow of himself.

In spite of the fact that coach Marco van Basten sent the Oranje B on the pitch, Romania continued its weak performance and lost 2-0 to the Netherlands. Meanwhile in Zurich, the injury of Ribéry and the mistake of Abidal - resulting in a penalty and a red card - put a quick end to the French dreams about reaching the quarter-finals.

When Jaroslav Plasil scored the second goal making it 2-0 for the Czech Republic, no one really thought that the Turkish side could come back in the game, as they did against Switzerland. And then there was Petr Cech. The goalkeeper with the funny hat, let the ball slip out of his hands, practically handing a goal to Villareal striker Nihat Kahveci. This apparently felt so good, that two minutes later Nihat did it again, putting the 1996 runner-up out of the competition. In the quarter-finals, Turkey will meet Croatia. One thing seems to be certain: being ahead 1-0 at half-time against the Turks isn't necessarily a good thing.

With yet another 3-goal win - this time against France - the Dutch team is already the winner of group "C" a.k.a. The Death Group. Not only that, but coach Marco Van Basten can decide whether he wants Italy or France to remain in the competition. All the oranjes have to do is lose their last game against Romania and both of the 2006 World Cup finalists would be out.

After the disappointing performance against Croatia and the tie between
Poland and Austria, the best the Germans can hope for - with at least a
draw against the Austrians - is a second place finish in the group. In
that case, Germany would play Portugal in the quarter-finals which
promises anything but easy.

Day 5 of the Euro 2008 produced the first team to advance to the quarter-finals and the first to say goodbye to the competition. Portugal became group winners by beating the Czech Republic 3-1 and - with the late score from Arda Turan - Turkey put an end to Switzerland's dreams. In the final round the Czech Republic will play Turkey to decide which of the two teams will advance to the quarter-finals. The Czech have a slight edge as a draw in that game would mean that they are the runners up of the group.

World Champions Italy suffered their worst loss in the history of the European Championships. In fact the last time the Italians lost by three goals in a major tournament was at the 1970 World Cup in Mexico. In the final of the tournament Brazil defeated the squadra azzurra by 4 goals to 1. Meanwhile in the other game of the group Romania and France played a scoreless draw in perhaps the most boring game of the EC yet.
