Budapest the most liveable city in Eastern Europe
Written by Attila Leitner
Monday, 15 June 2009
Budapest was judged the most liveable Eastern European city, and ranked 55th out of 140, according to a survey by the British-based research and advisory company Economist Intelligence Unit (EIU).

Vancouver retained its place at the top of the rankings, with Vienna and Melbourne second and third, respectively. Harare was placed last, due to the ongoing crisis in Zimbabwe. Canadian and Australian cities accounted for six of the top ten most liveable cities, with Vienna, Helsinki, Zurich and Geneva all making the cut. Most of the poorest performing metropolises were in Africa or Asia, where civil instability and poor infrastructure present significant challenges.

Top in Eastern Europe

Budapest was followed by Prague (60), Bratislava (65) and Warsaw (70) while Bucharest came last of the regional cities featured, in 85th place. Athens (63rd) was judged the least liveable city in Western Europe, failing to match the regional average in any category and suffering from educational and infrastructural challenges akin to less-developed countries than Greece.

“Major cities usually benefit from the attractions that they offer, but also suffer from problems such as crime, the threat of terrorist attacks and overstretched transport infrastructure,” said Jon Copestake, the editor of the report.

The Livability Ranking is part of EIU’s annual Worldwide Cost of Living survey and assesses living conditions by assigning a rating of comfort for over 30 factors, in five categories: stability; healthcare; culture and environment; education; and infrastructure.
